Highlights
• Ridgeway Long-Distance Footpath
• Ivinghoe Beacon
• Ashridge Estate & Bridgewater Monument
• Tearooms, local pubs & picnic
Itinerary
This superb circular walk leads from Tring station in Hertfordshire and up onto the Chilterns escarpment. The first half of the route follows the Ridgeway Long-Distance Footpath, a 136-kilometre hilltop track that begins in Wiltshire and ends at Ivinghoe Beacon, one of the highest points in the Chilterns Hills. Passing through beech woodland and over chalk uplands, the walk gives fine views over the Vale of Aylesbury, a patchwork of farmland dotted with small villages and towns. From Ivinghoe Beacon, the route leads back through the woods of the extensive Ashridge Estate, once the seat of the dukes of Bridgewater and now home to a network of public footpaths and some handily placed tearooms. Beyond the Bridgewater Monument, which dominates the hillside hereabouts, the route drops down into the handsome village of Aldbury, with half-timbered cottages and a duck pond.
Lunch
Please bring something for your lunch as the only pub is at the end of the walk. We will picnic on top of the Ivinghoe Beacon.
We reward ourselves in excellent local pub at the end of the walk.
